Children's Area Expansion

In 2007, the Monroe County Council approved Monroe County Public Library's proposal to create a Library Capital Project Fund (LCPF) to carry out specific capital improvements. The LCPF provided funding to begin planning in 2008 for an expansion of the Children's area at the Ellettsville Branch that will add approximately 1,600 sq. ft. of new space. In 2008 the County Council approved LCPF funding for fiscal year 2009 for the library to complete the Ellettsville branch addition.

The library now has drawings from the project's architects (Odle McGuire Shook) to share with the community. Please tell us what you think.

Architectural Narrative

The proposed addition is designed to expand the Children's Area and provide additional space for families to share the library experience together. The 1,900 square feet addition will include addtional shelving for collection growth, reading nooks, comfortable soft seating, and natural lighting.

Interior design will include a timeless whimsical theme incorporating "kites" inspired by a local kite maker. An entry into the children's area will be designed to be fun and enticing. High clearstory windows along the northeast of the sloped ceiling will provide natural day lighting. Interior finishes will include carpet, paint on gypsum board and acoustical ceiling tiles. An alternate will be included to incorporate colored or stained glass by a local Indiana Artist. "Green" design principles will be utilized throughout the addition including finish selection, natural lighting, heating/cooling equipment and lighting selections.

The exterior finishes will use limestone and standing seam metal roof to match existing. The exterior design will incorporate the "kite theme" with the roof slopes. There will be large energy efficient windows on the northwest and southeast elevation to take advantage of the views to the adjacent park and the proposed courtyard.

The structural system for the proposed addition is a post-and-beam steel framing system on spread concrete pad footings supporting sloping steel roof joists, metal deck with complimentary roof slopes to the existing.
